                        ................ GREEN is definitely IN!

With headlines in newspapers across Canada claiming that the “environmental sector is growing 60% faster than the economy,” there’s an increasing chartreuse flair to all carbon footprint-y careers these days.

And the Environmental Careers Organization, (ECO Canada), in a 2008 media report, forecast that, by 2011, environmental employment in Canada is expected to reach 573,565 – an increase of 8.1%. The national growth rate is estimated at 6.6%, meaning that jobs in the environmental sector are growing at a rate 23% faster than the national average.

So how do we keep up with the plethora of new careers, jobs, training, and volunteer opportunities springing forth on the heels of this boom? Here is a list of key BC and national websites designed to bring you up to speed:

In addition to its extensive Job Board, ECO Canada, -- founded in 1992 as part of the Sector Councils initiative -- focuses primarily on technical and scientific positions, in addition to a variety of environment-industry related services to industry, educational institutions and government. It also has profiles on the predicted Top 5 Green Careers of 2009. YouTube even has a video of the recent ECO Canada Environmental Employer of the Year Awards.

The National Green Pages has a BC page featuring a host of environmental news and articles, job opportunities and information related to sustainable communities, profiles of green businesses and community events.

Green-Jobs.ca provides a number of other career, job search and networking resources, including places to get information and find educational programs.
WorkCabin offers more job postings across Canada.

Google has a useful directory of Environmental Careers.

To find out about certificate programs in environmental education, check out the Canadian Center for Environmental Education.

The Canadian Environment Network (RCEN) oversees a network of regional environmental groups and organizations across Canada.

For a variety of other related links, check out Planet Friendly.

And, what would a Green Careers article be without mention of Canada’s foremost Green Advocate, David Suzuki. Find a few moments now to take his Nature Challenge. And take a few carbon footprint-y steps, yourself, to greening up your life and career.
